This week we studied Chapter 18, which focuses on the celebration of the Anointing of the Sick. In what times are you in need of support and comfort? How do you ask for it? Who offers it to you? On Monday we learned that Jesus is with us when we are suffering. Jesus' friendship always strengthens us. In the sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick, Christ comforts and suffers with those in need.
The main parts of the Anointing of the Sick are the prayer of faith, laying on of hands, and anointing with oil. Similar to what we've discussed in our Confirmation unit, anointing with oil is a sign of the power and presence of the Holy Spirit. It's also a sign of healing and strengthening.
All of us in the Church have a responsibility to those who are seriously weakened by sickness or old age.
As our fifth grade service project, each of you made "New Year Crackers" for those in a local nursing home. Let's remember the Lord's words we used on our letter to those in need:
Gracious is the Lord and just; yes, our God is merciful (Psalm 116:5)
May your kindesss, O Lord, be upon us; we have put our hope in you (Psalm 33:22)
All of you wrote wonderful words of kindness, consideration and sympathy. Your generosity will likely be the highlight of someone's day. Doesn't it feel good to serve?
God of love,
ever caring,
ever strong,
stand by us in our time of need.
Watch over your children who are sick,
look after them in every danger,
and grant them your healing and peace.
We ask this in the name of Jesus the Lord. Amen.
Homework:
1.) Bring your confirmation lists with you next week for a class project.
2.) Read pages 91 - 96 and answer questions at the end of the chapter.
Continue to serve the Lord!
Many blessings,
Mrs. D.
